In one weeks’ time…

The Nation, nay the WORLD, will be watching as Obama is inaugurated. Many see him as the lightning rod for change…and maybe he is. I personally dont think much earth-shattering is going to go on, I think it will be business as usual, seeing as how Obama is already demanding that Congress authorize the remaining $350Billion from the bailout boondoggle. That surprises me, in fact. I have a sneaking suspicion that there is more to this bailout than we will ever know…and I deeply resent that the beneficiaries of this bailout dont have to account to the public for PUBLIC monies!!! Im sure Obama has far more socially conscious plans for this money, but the fact remains, someone down the line will be picking up the tab for the unmitigated recklessness of those mortgage lenders. And it should have been THEM! Actually, they should NEVER have gotten the $$ in the first place!! If a small business owner makes a bad business decision and his business folds, nobody rushes to hand him money to stay in business…..Im just saying.

Anyway, back to Rose-colored Inaugurations. I do think Obama is more concerned about the Average Joe than the Bushwhacker was (no, I KNOW he is) and goodness knows, we desperately need to get those damn War Hawks out of the White House. Time for transparency again, and accountability, and if we get that restored, I will join the world in feeling hopeful again. I’d like to see the entire lending industry get a HUGE overhaul, starting with the major credit lenders. They should have strict accountability, and transparency and there should be strict oversight to that sector. I’d also like to see the energy producers, particularly big oil, be strictly regulated. The obscene profits they’ve garnered over the last 8 years have been a black eye on the face of every consumer. I’d like to see the Environment protected again, and a new commitment to the arts and sciences. Time will tell if Obama cares about those things as well…

On a final note, Hillary will get a chance to shine in her own right. It wasnt quite the role I wanted for her, but she may yet sit in that Presidential seat. I hope so.

Or Not.

So.  So much for high hopes and good intentions.  I cant get away from what I am or who I am.  I am a gal who speaks her mind, in public places, and gets shit for it.  Even after I apologize, it doesnt seem to help.  Sigh.  I hate groveling too.  I hate being made to feel like a bad person because I blurted out something spontaneously that someone disagreed with, or didnt want to hear.  Im learning it doesnt help to do damage control either.  It just doesnt.  So, here I am, 6 days into the new year already realizing that its no different than the OLD year, the one I left behind, the one I hoped I could improve upon.  Well, to all the asswipes that cant accept an apology or who think they are so perfect they’ll never do anything THEY’D have to apologize for–here’s a NEWZ FLASH for ya, NOBODY’S PERFECT.  (Believe me when I say that I had to exercise great restraint not to put what I really wanted to say)

And all my talk about finding something GOOD about myself I could build upon?  Well, I guess thats subjective isnt it?  What I think is good (being honest for instance, or spontaneous) other folks detest.   Its kinda hard to build up yer self confidence when you’re so out of sync with the rest of the world that the qualities you value in yourself are pretty much what makes you NOT FIT IN!!  Well, SCREW THAT.  Fitting in is OVERRATED anyway.  I dont know what the hell the future holds for me anymore, but I sure hope it includes someone who can appreciate me just the way I am.  Let me say that again:  JUST THE WAY I AM.

Starting the New Year off…different

•January 3, 2009 • 5 Comments

well, lets just say that I have the willpower of a noodle about some things apparently.  The things I intended to resolve to do better, I’ve already (3 days into the year!) slacked on.   And, of course, I am wracked with guilt.  Already.  Then came my epiphany.

My daughter left one of her magazines at my house and I was reading some of the articles, and one dealt with a gal who had resolved in years past to lose weight, and every year failed, which left her feeling bad about herself.  She then had a revelation: to start liking herself just the way she was.  She said her self image was all wrapped up in the things she didn’t like about herself, and she decided to concentrate on the things she DID like, and to start  seeing herself differently.  Apparently, that made all the difference!  She started complimenting her reflection in the mirror, bought a new wardrobe that flattered her figure’s good points and stopped hiding behind bulky unflattering clothes.  She built her confidence level and took that new confidence with her when she moved to New York.

I like that idea.  I need to see myself differently too.  I want to do what she did, and create a new appreciation for the me that I AM, not the me I wish I was…I know a girlfriend at work does that very thing, and she is a very VERY alluring and lovely lady and she is not fashion model thin.  BUT: she has confidence, and it comes with a sort of charisma that folks find attractive….so, I think instead of my usual “Im gonna change the way I am” resolutions, I think I’ll make some “I will appreciate these qualities I already have” resolutions, and see how I can exhibit them to their best advantage.  Now, I just have to figure out what my best qualities are!

well, I was blown away when I saw this video:

then I saw THIS ONE, and it was NO CONTEST:

I find I cant keep my eyes off of that Bodhran player. After much searching and whatnot, I’ve discovered his name is Ray Fean. I also discovered I am not alone. This comment I found on Amazon.com from a review for the Celtic Woman DVD:

“If I had to pick my favorite Celtic Woman artist – it wouldn’t be one of the girls. Drummer Ray Fean has been drumming professionally for 17 years that I know of, maybe more. He has also done soundtrack arrangements and has a history of giving back to the community. When I paid for my front row ticket and “meet and greet” pass, it wasn’t to see the girls even though they are great. I go to see the Drummer!!!! He does more for most women in the last 45 seconds of Dulaman than most husbands/boyfriends can do with their tippers in an entire night.”

(you said a mouthful lady!)

Here he is with Mairead Nesbitt:

OH MY GAWD! That man puts IDEAS in my head….

UPDATE: So, he has a BLOG, and Ive commented on there, and linked back to here and and and…..he’s going to see my impure thoughts. Well, I considered deleting them but then I realized, its how I FEEL and I need to accept responsibility for what I said. So, Ray, if you ever read this, in my own defense, all I can say is, if a man is gonna move the way you do, with a body like yours, (and I like the ponytail too!) you better expect the kind of responses you’ve seen here. Im sure Im not the first….nor the last. DAMN, there goes my chance for an autograph 😦

SIGH. This saga is more like a roller coaster ride each day! Last time I checked, Investigating Obama blog has now posted that the earlier info was not as certain as previously believed. However, as far as I can tell, the US Supreme Court will still be looking into this issue, so stay tuned.

Obama’s Kenyan Birth Evidence to be Revealed Friday, Online – Update

Permission to copy and post this article’s text is granted, I.O., AW.
Article updated below, originally posted, 12:xx AM

I.O. Update 12/31, 7:07pm CT – An announcement on PlainsRadio.com has Ed Hale to address his audience about this at 7:45pm CT, today.

A private investigator in Hawaii has uncovered the divorce decree for Barack Obama’s father and mother, which indicates they had “one child under the age of eighteen, born in Kenya.” That is the report of Ed Hale of PlainsRadio.com, an Internet radio site which has focused upon the natural born Citizen challenges to Obama’s presidential eligibility.

Hale announced this during his evening Internet broadcast on PlainsRadio.com, Tuesday, 12/30 and confirmed it with I.O. in an online interview, later that night. He reported that certified copies of this documentation have been sent from Hawaii by the investigator to himself and four others. Hale is to receive his copy today, Wednesday, 12/31 and plans to post it graphically on the site, during the day. He will also discuss this on a special Internet broadcast, between 6pm and 10pm Central Time, tonight. [I.O., 12/31, 2:30pm CT: Ed Hale has sent an email stating that his delivery has been delayed until Friday, 1/2. We wait another day for what he has to show. We can be patient in light of how long we wait for Barack Obama to admit the truth of his ineligibility per Article II (and show us the whole truth of his actual Hawaiian birth certificate, besides)] The site streams audio as soon as it is accessed via Web browser.

The Texan Internet entrepreneur relates he got fed up with the lack of documentation on Obama and decided to discuss ideas with his radio audience. His offer to hire an investigator was met with piecemeal sums of money from listeners to his broadcasts. Hale said some of the information one would expect to find was not available. For example, documentation from Obama’s mother, Stanley Ann’s divorce to her second husband, Lolo Soetoro had vanished. Hale speculates, the reason this forthcoming 1964 divorce decree had not also been “scrubbed” could be that the divorce had been filed not by Obama’s mother, but by Barack H. Obama, Sr. Thus, it may have been overlooked by any plumbers for Obama.

Hale does admit to incomplete certainty of his investigator’s work until he receives it, partially due to the PI’s accent, the telephone connection, and his slight hearing impediment. However, he is very confident of what he will receive during the day. Mark S. McGrew, who writes about Obama’s natural born Citizen problems for Pravda.ru, accompanied Hale in his broadcast and also expressed confidence. McGrew had sought publication in numerous American news outlets, but they turned down his articles referring to Obama’s apparent ineligibility. Russia’s Pravda however, decided his effort to find and report the truth was not to be redlined.

As often related, Barack Obama, due simply to his U.K. citizenship at birth via his Kenyan father, is not a natural born Citizen of America, by definition and the original intent for that term in the Constitution. The Supreme Court has turned down cases which make this point, but according to a September decision in a lower federal court (regarding John McCain’s eligibility problem) this would be due to a question of jurisdiction, until Congress is to certify the Electoral College vote on January 8. Further action is to occur, after this date. You may read about this in previous I.O. articles and the sites linked in its sidebar.

Meanwhile, on the question of Obama’s place of birth, professionals dealing with documents and forensic evidence have testified that the online “certificate of live birth” provided by Obama is not identifiable evidence of American birth. Now, if Obama’s parents’ divorce decree states that he was born in Kenya (as his Kenyan grandmother has repeatedly stated) the second epistemological wheel is coming off his vehicle to the White House.

Will Congress pay attention and do its Constitutional duty?

Earthquakes, Volcanoes and Tsunamis OH MY!

•December 30, 2008 • 6 Comments

So, the other night I dreamt about an earthquake. I remember in my dream thinking: at least this is only a dream (because the shaking felt so real). Welp, not long after, we actually DID have an earthquake. It woke me up. So, Im laying there in bed with the bed shaking and the lamp on the nightstand rattling, thinking: I hope my cats are ok……

Folks in my family have long had various brushes with psychic or paranormal phenomena. All except me. I think this was a first for me to have a prophetic dream. Of course my dream had slight differences, like I just invited an old couple into my home, then the house started shaking, and in real life I was in bed (since it was 4am) but but but….here’s the graph (and the shake map) of the earthquake:

looks pretty impressive when you see it in color like that, no? And it wasnt a very big quake, either. But big enough to be felt which is all that matters.  Here’s a link to the archived info from the recording station at Lake Almanor Fire Station.

so anyway, Im reading the news yesterday and I came across this article:

CHEYENNE, Wyo. – Yellowstone National Park was jostled by a host of small earthquakes for a third straight day Monday, and scientists watched closely to see whether the more than 250 tremors were a sign of something bigger to come. Swarms of small earthquakes happen frequently in Yellowstone, but it’s very unusual for so many earthquakes to happen over several days, said Robert Smith, a professor of geophysics at the University of Utah.

“They’re certainly not normal,” Smith said. “We haven’t had earthquakes in this energy or extent in many years.”

Smith directs the Yellowstone Seismic Network, which operates seismic stations around the park. He said the quakes have ranged in strength from barely detectable to one of magnitude 3.8 that happened Saturday. A magnitude 4 quake is capable of producing moderate damage.

“This is an active volcanic and tectonic area, and these are the kinds of things we have to pay attention to,” Smith said. “We might be seeing something precursory.

“Could it develop into a bigger fault or something related to hydrothermal activity? We don’t know. That’s what we’re there to do, to monitor it for public safety.”

The strongest of dozens of tremors Monday was a magnitude 3.3 quake shortly after noon. All the quakes were centered beneath the northwest end of Yellowstone Lake.

A park ranger based at the north end of the lake reported feeling nine quakes over a 24-hour period over the weekend, according to park spokeswoman Stacy Vallie. No damage was reported.

“There doesn’t seem to be anything to be alarmed about,” Vallie said.

Smith said it’s difficult to say what might be causing the tremors. He pointed out that Yellowstone is the caldera of a volcano that last erupted 70,000 years ago.

He said Yellowstone remains very geologically active — and its famous geysers and hot springs are a reminder that a pool of magma still exists five to 10 miles underground.

“That’s just the surface manifestation of the enormous amount of heat that’s being released through the system,” he said.

Yellowstone has had significant earthquakes as well as minor ones in recent decades. In 1959, a magnitude 7.5 quake near Hebgen Lake just west of the park triggered a landslide that killed 28 people.

*************************************************

Maybe Im just earthquake sensitive right now, but Yellowstone seriously scares the CRAP outa me. That is the caldera of a super volcano, and if it becomes active, that whole region is in for a world of hurt. Not to mention the potential for serious global consequences, along the same lines as Krakatoa, where debris in the atmosphere hampered crop growing conditions for quite some time. Volcanoes are nothing to sniff at!!!! My brother, many years ago, told me that on one of his hunting expeditions in Yellowstone, a park ranger told him that the trees at one end of the lake are dying, and that the lake is actually tipping. To give you an idea of the SIZE of this thing, see below:

takes up the WHOLE FREAKIN STATE!!!! If you’re at all morbid and want to see what would happen (theoretically) if a supervolcano blew, go HERE

Lastly, I direct your attention to the Tsunami. But not just ANY Tsunami, NO. I remind you of the catastrophic tsunami that struck Indonesia 4 years ago on 12/26/04, the one that resulted from an earthquake so profound, it rung the planet like a bell. Literally. Sent shock waves around the entire planet for quite some time. LIVE SCIENCE article states:

Earth’s very gravity balance was altered, and the North Pole shifted by an inch.

Wiki says this:

Energy released by the earthquake

The energy released on the earth’s surface only, MEwhich is the seismic potential for damage, by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami was estimated at 1.1×1017joules[19] or 26.3 megatons of TNT. This energy is equivalent to over 1502 times that of the Hiroshima atomic bomb, but less than that of Tsar Bomba, the largest nuclear weapon ever detonated. However, this is but a tiny fraction of the total work done MW (and thus energy) by this quake, 4.0×1029ergs (40 ZJ)[20], the vast majority underground. This equates to 4.0×1022 J, over 363 thousand times more than its ME. This is a truly enormous figure, equivalent to 9,560 gigatons of TNT equivalent (550 million times that of Hiroshima), or about 370 years of energy use in the United States at 2005 levels of 1.08×1020 J.

The only recorded earthquakes with a larger MW were the 1960 Chilean and 1964 Alaskan quakes, with 2.5×1030 ergs (250 ZJ) and 7.5×1029 ergs (75 ZJ) respectively.[21] Please see USGS:Measuring the size of earthquakes.

The earthquake generated seismic oscillation of the Earth’s surface of up to 20–30 cm (8–12 in), equivalent to the effect of the tidal forces caused by the Sun and Moon. The shock waves of the earthquake were felt across the planet; as far away as the U.S. state of Oklahoma, where vertical movements of 3 mm (0.12 in) were recorded.

Because of its enormous energy release and shallow rupture depth, the earthquake generated remarkable seismic ground motions around the globe, particularly due to huge Rayleigh (surface) elastic waves that exceeded 1 cm in vertical amplitude everywhere on Earth. The record section plot below displays vertical displacements of the Earth’s surface recorded by seismometers from the IRIS/USGS Global Seismographic Network plotted with respect to time (since the earthquake initiation) on the horizontal axis, and vertical displacements of the Earth on the vertical axis (note the 1 cm scale bar at the bottom for scale). The seismograms are arranged vertically by distance from the epicenter in degrees. The earliest, lower amplitude, signal is that of the compressional (P) wave, which takes about 22 minutes to reach the other side of the planet (the antipode; in this case near Ecuador). The largest amplitude signals are seismic surface waves that reach the antipode after about 100 minutes. The surface waves can be clearly seen to reinforce near the antipode (with the closest seismic stations in Ecuador), and to subsequently encircle the planet to return to the epicentral region after about 200 minutes. A major aftershock (magnitude 7.1) can be seen at the closest stations starting just after the 200 minute mark. This aftershock would be considered a major earthquake under ordinary circumstances, but is dwarfed by the mainshock.

Vertical-component ground motions recorded by the IRIS/USGS Global Seismographic Network

The shift of mass and the massive release of energy very slightly altered the Earth’s rotation. The exact amount is not yet known, but theoretical models suggest the earthquake shortened the length of a day by 2.68 microseconds, due to a decrease in the oblateness of the Earth.[22] It also caused the Earth to minutely “wobble” on its axis by up to 2.5 cm (1 in) in the direction of 145° east longitude,[23] or perhaps by up to 5 or 6 cm (2.0 to 2.4 in).[24] However, because of tidal effects of the Moon, the length of a day increases at an average of 15 µs per year, so any rotational change due to the earthquake will be lost quickly. Similarly, the natural Chandler wobble of the Earth, which in some cases can be up to 15 m (50 ft), will eventually offset the minor wobble produced by the earthquake.

More spectacularly, there was 10 m (33 ft) movement laterally and 4–5 m (13–16 ft) vertically along the fault line. Early speculation was that some of the smaller islands south-west of Sumatra, which is on the Burma Plate (the southern regions are on the Sunda Plate), might have moved south-west by up to 36 m (118 ft), but more accurate data released more than a month after the earthquake found the movement to be about 20 cm (7.9 in).[25] Since movement was vertical as well as lateral, some coastal areas may have been moved to below sea level. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands appear to have shifted south-west by around 1.25 m (4.1 ft) and to have sunk by 1 m (3.28 ft).[26]

In February 2005, the Royal Navy vessel HMS Scott surveyed the seabed around the earthquake zone, which varies in depth between 1,000 m and 5,000 m (3,300 ft and 16,500 ft). The survey, conducted using a high-resolution, multi-beam sonar system, revealed that the earthquake had made a huge impact on the topography of the seabed. 1,500-meter (5,000 ft) high thrust ridges created by previous geologic activity along the fault had collapsed, generating landslides several kilometers wide. One such landslide consisted of a single block of rock some 100 m high and 2 km long (300 ft by 1.25 mi). The momentum of the water displaced by tectonic uplift had also dragged massive slabs of rock, each weighing millions of tons, as far as 10 km (7 mi) across the seabed. An oceanic trench several kilometres wide was exposed in the earthquake zone.[27]

The TOPEX/Poseidon and Jason 1 satellites happened to pass over the tsunami as it was crossing the ocean.[28] These satellites carry radars that measure precisely the height of the water surface; anomalies of the order of 50 cm (20 in) were measured. Measurements from these satellites may prove invaluable for the understanding of the earthquake and tsunami.[29] Unlike data from tide gauges installed on shores, measurements obtained in the middle of the ocean can be used for computing the parameters of the source earthquake without having to compensate for the complex ways in which close proximity to the coast changes the size and shape of a wave.

Now THATS intense!!! HERE is where you can find the audio clip of that massive event that was recorded UNDERWATER hundreds of miles AWAY!!!  **NOTE**  this clip used to be hosted on Live Science and easily accessible, but Ive had to hunt down another version, save to my computer and upload to zshare.  zhare is a perfectly good site for file hosting, but you have to wade your way thru ads.  Thats how it stays free.  anyway, the file is an mp3 file and should be easily read by most OS.  Let me know if you have problems, and I’ll try to find another clip….

I dont know about you folks, but stuff like this gives me the heebie jeebies….

Jabberwocky–its ALL Blarney!

•December 29, 2008 • 8 Comments

Lewis Carroll

(from Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There, 1872)

`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

“Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!”

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought —
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

“And, has thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!’
He chortled in his joy.

`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

Sheer Genius, No? Generations of school children have had to study this poem to get a sense of nonsense. Wikipedia says:

The poem is sometimes used in primary schools to teach students about the use of portmanteaux and nonsense words in poetry, as well as use of nouns and verbs.[2]

Because I didnt know what a portmanteau word was, I also looked THAT up:

“Portmanteau word” is used to describe a linguistic blend, namely “a word formed by blending sounds from two or more distinct words and combining their meanings”.[1]

So, Brillig, slithy, gyre, gimble et al are portmanteaux. ok. Anyway, back to the Jabberwocky. That poem has always held a special fascination for me, I consider it sheer Genius of a type Ive never seen in print since. Perhaps it was drug induced? Perhaps it was an epiphany, or maybe just an attempt to amuse a child with silliness. Whatever. What I do know is wordsmiths everywhere will tell you that Jabberwocky is the epitome of the wordsmithing craft. The words THEMSELVES become the focus. I can think of maybe one other example of nonsense similar to Jabberwocky, and that is the song I AM THE WALRUS, by John Lennon (but credited as Lennon/McCartney)

I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together.
See how they run like pigs from a gun, see how they fly.
I’m crying.

Sitting on a cornflake, waiting for the van to come.
Corporation tee-shirt, stupid bloody tuesday.
Man, you been a naughty boy, you let your face grow long.
I am the eggman, they are the eggmen.
I am the walrus, goo goo g’joob.

Mister city policeman sitting
Pretty little policemen in a row.
See how they fly like lucy in the sky, see how they run.
I’m crying, i’m crying.
I’m crying, i’m crying.

Yellow matter custard, dripping from a dead dog’s eye.
Crabalocker fishwife, pornographic priestess,
Boy, you been a naughty girl you let your knickers down.
I am the eggman, they are the eggmen.
I am the walrus, goo goo g’joob.

Sitting in an english garden waiting for the sun.
If the sun don’t come, you get a tan
From standing in the english rain.
I am the eggman, they are the eggmen.
I am the walrus, goo goo g’joob g’goo goo g’joob.

Expert textpert choking smokers,
Don’t you thing the joker laughs at you?
See how they smile like pigs in a sty,
See how they snied.
I’m crying.

Semolina pilchard, climbing up the eiffel tower.
Elementary penguin singing hari krishna.
Man, you should have seen them kicking edgar allan poe.
I am the eggman, they are the eggmen.
I am the walrus, goo goo g’joob g’goo goo g’joob.
Goo goo g’joob g’goo goo g’joob g’goo.

Yellow Matter Custard? the ewww factor is off the charts! I always liked the line about “boy, you’ve been a naughty girl you let your knickers down” and that bit about “expert textpert choking smokers, dont you think the joker laughs at you” seems to be a gauntlet thrown down to anyone who tries to figure it out. or not…(is that a joker I hear laffing?)

Ok, there you have it. My paen to nonsense, to wordsmithing, to BLARNEY if you will.
